WVUH-East Celebrates EMS Week
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is celebrating the 37th annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week through May 22 with events in communities across the nation organized around the theme, "Anytime. Anywhere. We'll be there."
WVU Hospitals-East will honor local EMS providers with special events during this national celebration. On Thursday, Jefferson Memorial Hospital will host a luncheon and dinner for EMS workers in the cafeteria’s Jefferson Room. On Friday, City Hospital will host a breakfast for EMS providers followed by a cookout luncheon for EMS workers and their families at the pavilion on the City Hospital campus.
“The Emergency Department staffs at both hospitals recognize the value and the accomplishments of our EMS providers,” stated Donnie Grubb, trauma coordinator for City Hospital. “EMS workers provide a vital, invaluable public service that saves lives everyday,” he added.
EMS personnel include paramedics, emergency medical technicians, first responders, fire fighters and police, some paid, some volunteer. “These men and women are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24/7,” stated Tammy Hough, Jefferson Memorial Hospital’s trauma coordinator.
Grubb and Hough agree that having access to quality emergency medical services dramatically improves the survival and recovery rates of those who experience sudden illness or injury. EMS members, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills.
