Susan R. Snowden, chairman of the City Hospital Foundation board of directors, recently announced the names of 23 recipients of the 2011 Judge Gray Silver, Jr. Health Professions Scholarship. Ten of the recipients are recent graduates while 13 are re-applicants from previous years. Each of the 23 students has been awarded a $500 scholarship to the college they will be attending this fall.
The ten new recipients representing five area high schools include Jennifer Burdock, Mary-Margaret Chaffee, Kyle Garlow, Jamie Huff, Samantha Hunter, Nathan Jalazo, Kristen Kirkpatrick, Sasha Kremin, Cameron Lyons and Timothy Pracht. All recipients will enter college this fall majoring in a health profession.
Recipients from previous years receiving scholarships again this year include Kayla Albright, Jessica Burkhart, Ryan Carroll, Charlotte Cobb, Megan Frye, Emily DeGennaro, Paige Miller, Bethany Pennock, Molly Quinn, Kyle Ransom, Michael Seem, Sara Smith and Lauren Taylor.
The Judge Gray Silver, Jr. Health Professions Scholarship Program was established by the City Hospital Foundation in 2001 to offer financial assistance to area students interested in pursuing health professions. Named after the late Judge Gray Silver, Jr., a charter member of the City Hospital Board of Trustees and City Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, the awards are $500 per year for a maximum of four years, and the students must reapply each year.
A committee comprised of representatives of the Foundation and City Hospital selects the recipients based on criteria such as the health profession being pursued, academic achievements, character/leadership, community activities, and financial need.
“As the area’s regional health system, we want to support students who are committed to pursing health care careers,” said Teresa McCabe, vice president of marketing & development for WVU Hospitals-East. “By offering assistance to area students, we hope that some may consider employment opportunities at City Hospital or one of the WVUH-East Health System affiliates once their degree is completed,” she added.
