Jefferson Memorial Hosts Open House for New Center of Clinical Excellence

RANSON, W.Va. – Officials at West Virginia University Hospitals-East’s Jefferson Memorial Hospital recently announced the opening of a Center of Clinical Excellence designed to evaluate and strengthen the competency level of the organization’s nursing staff and leadership.

“The education department and nursing leadership recognize the need to create an environment of communication and trust so growth can occur,” said Val Penick, education supervisor at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

The new Center includes a computer based learning center and library for the clinical staff as well as a simulation center to evaluate knowledge and skills. Case scenarios for teaching will also be used in the simulation center which will be very beneficial to nursing students, according to Penick.

The primary goals for the Center include new hire support, competency development and evaluation, coordination of the education council’s efforts across all hospital units, and providing support for staff and management education.

An open house for staff and the public will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 2 until 3:30 p.m. on the third floor of Jefferson Memorial Hospital. The Center for Excellence is located in Rooms 320 and 325.

“We are excited about this new Center and the programs and resources that it will bring to our staff and students here at Jefferson Memorial Hospital,” Penick commented, adding, “Creating healthy work environments for staff will translate into better care for our patients. Our ultimate focus is to enrich lives through learning.”
