MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – April Burkett was recently named City Hospital’s Quality Service Award winner for August 2010.
Each month, the hospital’s Service Award Committee selects an employee to receive the Quality Service Award. Burkett, a respiratory therapist in the cardiopulmonary department, was nominated for going that “extra mile” to care for her patients.
According to a co-worker, Burkett had heard a patient’s wife say that she hoped that someone would shave her husband. This was on a Friday. Burkett talked to the patient and felt he was depressed and wanted to give up and die. On Sunday, he still hadn’t been shaved. After giving him a nebulizer treatment, she shaved him, joked around with him and lifted his spirits, which made his wife very happy.
Criteria for selection as a Quality Service Award recipient includes: demonstrating a consistently high level of productivity and quality of work along with a high degree of initiative in performing work responsibilities, displaying exceptional dependability, exhibiting effective relationships with others, displaying a commitment to service and serving the City Hospital community, and meeting the criteria for the WVUH-East mission, vision and values.
Nomination forms for the Quality Service Award are available at locations throughout the City Hospital campus. Anyone who witnesses an employee displaying outstanding service is encouraged to complete and submit a nomination form.
